⚠️ 90% of Startups Fail, Here's How Not To

🚀 Introducing my newsletter - The Runway Ventures

Hey hustler,

First of all — Happy New Year! 🎉 It has been 5 months since my previous issue was published. My apologies for keeping you waiting as I’ve been bootstrapping my new startup (a story for another time), and finally our business turned profitable last month. 🙏🏻

Today's issue is special because this is the biggest update for Hustle Hub, and I’m very excited to share the announcement with you.

Yes, you’re right. I’m launching a newsletter — The Runway Ventures.

This is something I’ve been wanting to do for the longest time.

In today’s issue, I’ll share with you:

  • 🤔 Why launch this newsletter?

  • 🧠 What’s The Runway Ventures about?

  • 🚀 Why you should join us

Let’s get to it! 🤝🏻

🤔 Why launch this newsletter?

2023 had been a rollercoaster ride for me 🎢

Jan 2023: Building Staq
Feb 2023: Unable to fundraise for Staq
Mar 2023: In talk for potential acquisition
Apr 2023: Closed down Staq
May 2023: Lost & wondering what to do

To be honest, Jan - May 2023 is the darkest period of my life. After spending 1.5 years building Staq with my co-founder, we failed. When Staq was shut down on Apr 2023, I was depressed and lost. I didn’t know what to do.

After having a few conversations with other founders, I realised I wasn't alone, and that gave me the energy to pick myself up and keep fighting. Most importantly, I also reflected on the mistakes that we made in the past 1.5 years.

Throughout our startup journey, we made tons of mistakes, be it small or big. There were certain mistakes that we only realised at a later stage, and by the time we found out, it was too late. Our runway was left with 2 months, and we were dying.

Had we found out our mistakes a few months earlier by learning from other startup mistakes, we might have pivoted and still had enough runway to continue.

This experience made me understand the importance of learning from other startup mistakes. 90% of startups fail because founders made mistakes (like our case).

  • What if I can help people learn from startup mistakes to avoid making costly mistakes that would kill their startups?

  • What if I can help people become better founders?

  • What if I can build a founders community to support and learn from each other?

That’s how The Runway Ventures was born 🙏🏻

🧠 What’s The Runway Ventures about?

Now that you know the story behind it, here’s what I’ll write about in the newsletter. Every week, I’ll deep dive into:

  • ☠️ 1 Failed Startup → Analyse and deep dive into a failed startup

  • ⚠️ 2 Mistakes → Identify the 2 biggest mistakes that killed the startup

  • 🧠 3 Lessons Learned → Share 3 key learnings for founders

  • 🔗 The Runway Insights → Hand-pick a few useful articles about startup building

  • 🤝🏻 The Founders Corner → Q&A section where I’ll answer a selected question from the founders

🚀 Why you should join us

2 reasons:

  • 💪🏻 Help you become better founders by learning from other startup mistakes.

    • Mistakes are the best teachers, but also the biggest killers for startups.

    • By learning from other startup mistakes, you’re basically taking the shortcut to build a successful startup faster — while others are making tons of mistakes and struggling along the way.

  • 💟 It’s not just a newsletter, it’s a founders community to support and learn from each other.

    • By joining the newsletter, you’ll also get the exclusive invite to join our community on Discord to:

      • Ask any questions to clarify your doubts

      • Learn from other founders’ sharing

      • Find the right co-founder

      • Pitch your startup

      • … and many more!

    • This is the founders community I wished I had when I first started.
